We English Only Does Not Work

Finals week...weee! So right now I'm studying for my Economics finals and I have nine essays to write. I may do well or maybe not, depending upon how well I know the topic. I tend to write from the left and can attribute my sources properly, which is no problem, but I have a feeling my professor is a lefty and I have to prove that I know what I am writing...egads. So how is this English Only? I know that I will be graded for punctuation and all through the semester, I received "A"s for my writing skills. That's the easy part...though I did receive a "C" from another professor who taught Humanities. He is a humanist and has a Doctors in English Ph.D. So he graded me very harshly...no he graded me fairly but my "A" in writing dropped.

Still

English is a tough subject with rules one must follow, but also there are exceptions when it comes to English. I spoke to another professor and she said that there are more exceptions than rules. For example:

noun In·ter·net \ˈin-tər-ˌnet\
Popularity: Top 10% of words

Definition of Internet

  1. :  an electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world

This is the definition courtesy of Merriam Webster Dictionary. Why is Internet capitalized? According to Merriam Webster, proper nouns are capitalized:

Simple Definition of proper noun

  • : a word or group of words (such as “Noah Webster,” “Kentucky,” or “U.S. Congress”) that is the name of a particular person, place, or thing and that usually begins with a capital letter

Full Definition of proper noun

  1. :  a noun that designates a particular being or thing, does not take a limiting modifier, and is usually capitalized in English —called also proper name

Yet Internet is not a proper noun but just a noun. Other words like:

Simple Definition of d'oh

  • —used when you realize that you have just said or done something stupid or foolish

Full Definition of d'oh

  1. —used to express sudden recognition of a foolish blunder or an ironic turn of events

That is an interjection...why? Why is a noun capitalized when it isn't a proper noun or a grunting sound an adjective?  Here are the basics

Obviously, most of the people who read this blog know this and those who are "English elites" (note the quotes) can find errors in my blog, but the difference is, we at least try and when we're corrected, we learn. Yet those who promote English Only would call me an elite...ha ha. But these are the people who want everyone to speak "English". There is another English professor who I believe is Russian and she teaches English. She said to one of her student that Internet is capitalized. I asked why while walking through the hall and she said, "There are more exceptions than rules in English so we have to follow those rules." So what are the exceptions?

iPad
iPod
The Los Angeles Times
Internet
english
Right now there is a red squiggly line under the lower-case English but believe it or not, it is an exception...how so? Ever play billiards? English in this case is lower case. I was attempting to find exceptions but I settled with this. After reading the exceptions, I was bored and just posted it.

Still.

If an english er English professor is challenged by these rules and exceptions, how in the Hell will an immigrant fair? Pretty well, because, many immigrants learn English and do a fine job. Though their spoken  English inflection may not be up-to-snuff, many write better than most U.S. citizens...let alone a pro-English-Only advocate. Still I do have to laugh after reading this over again:

Teabaggers Punk'd By Anti-racists Who Get Them To Cheer Rant Against European-American Immigrants

...in Minneapolis, the demonstrators got punk'd by a young man who called himself "Robert Erickson".
"Erickson" got up and delivered a rant against European immigration. At first the crowd was whooping and hollering as he talked about the rights of "real Americans" -- but then it gradually tapered off as he went on and they realized they'd been had.
Here's the speech:
Hi, my name is Robert Erickson and I’m really excited to be here. Its people like all of you, and events like this that make our country great! Give yourselves a round of applause!

I just want to talk about a couple themes this afternoon because I love this country and I want to see America be the best place it can be.

Mr. Gutierrez is getting ready to propose an immigration bill in just a few short days, and we have to make sure he knows that we want a bill that's tough on immigration. Now is the time for us to stand up and make our voices heard!

In Minneapolis, where I’m from, we have a huge immigrant population that’s been causing a number of problems. With the economy in recession, and so many people getting laid off, and unable to find work, immigrants should not be competing for the few jobs that are out there. It's just not fair to the folks who have a claim to this land and the right to be here. All across America, they are contributing to the flooding of our job markets making it hard for Americans to find jobs. Well, I'm fed up, and it's time to let our politicians know that enough is enough, and we're not gonna take it any more!

We need to secure our borders to protect our country. We need to restore order and put an end to the anarchy that's sweeping the nation. We need tougher immigration laws to make sure that we send these people back where they came from. We need to protect the sovereignty of the real Americans. We need to hold our politicians accountable.

It's no secret that with an invasion of immigrants comes waves of crime. We see them involved in massive theft, in murder, and bringing diseases like smallpox, which is responsible for the death of millions of Americans. These aren't new problems, though -- they have been going on for hundreds of years, and continue to this day.

I say it's time for us to say enough is enough! Are you with me? Are you with me? Let's send these European immigrants back where they came from! I don't care if they are Polish, Irish, English, Italian, or Norwegian! European immigrants are responsible for the most violent and heinous crimes in the history of the world, including genocide and slavery! It's time to restore the sovereignty of people native to this land!

I want more workplace raids, starting with the big banks downtown. There are thousands of illegals working in those buildings, hiding in their offices, and taking Dakota jobs. Let's round them up and ship them out. Then we need to hit them at home where they sleep. I don’t care if we separate families, they should have known better when they came here illegally!

If we aren't able to stand up to these European immigrants, who can we stand up to? We need to send every one of them back home, right now.
Thank you very much, and we'll see you in the streets!

Columbus Go Home! Columbus Go Home! Columbus Go Home!
At the sixth paragraph, line two, I was thinking: huh? You have got to be kidding me. As I read further, I started to see what Erickson was mentioning and I was floored that these teabaggers could not comprehend what Erickson was saying. If I were there, I would be laughing and cheering him on. English Only does not mean just speaking English, but reading, writing and comprehension. 24/7 Wall Street breaks down the percentile and sadly, those who promote English Only are failing miserably.

If you're in college and you can't write, go to a community college and take ESL...no kidding. Learn the basics and build your foundation. If I decide to learn mathematics, I will take basic math, because I truly stink at math.
